Medical Podcasts from the Experts

Have you ever thought how useful it would be to view educational videos on current medical topics at your convenience rather than while sitting in a doctor’s office?  Through the wonders of modern computing, such an experience is possible when you subscribe to Podcasts.  Podcasts are audio or digital-media files which are broadcast over the internet.

Several major research and teaching hospitals such as Johns HopkinsCleveland Clinic, and Indiana University School of Medicine have been offering such subscriptions for the past few years.  They’re totally free, authoritative, reliable, and very informative.  While Podcasts can be dowloaded to a portable device like an MP3 player, they can also be played on a computer using media software.  Currently, topics available at these sites include Bullying Among Girls, Depression or Bipolar?, Assessing Heart Disease, Inhaled Steroids Use & COPD, and New Medicine for Migraines.

Google Tracks Flu

Search engine giant Google recently announced that they’ve figured out a very practical use for all the seemingly independent & individual searches performed at their site by producing something they’re calling Flu Trends.  As they explain on the site,  ”Google Flu Trends uses aggregated Google search data to estimate flu activity in your state up to two weeks faster than traditional systems.”  They figure that if people are asking about flu symptoms & treatments, then there’s a good chance they have it or know someone who does. Flu activity levels range from minimal to intense and are color coded to indicate severity.  The site includes links to the CDCCenter for Disease Control’s flu resources and a Flu Clinic Locator.

Why January 20th for inauguration?

It’s the dead of winter, not the beginning of a new fiscal or calendar year, so why January 20th? Great Seal of the United States

Blame it on the 20th amendment to the U.S. Constitution which was ratified in 1933.  It states in Section 1:

The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on the 3rd day of January, of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; and the terms of their successors shall then begin.

The above taken from a good explanation found at Wikipedia,
